St Andrews runs two linked specialist programmes: STARS in the primary school and Embracing Differences in the high school, so a child does not fall off a support cliff at age eleven. Classes are capped at eight students, with one-to-one learning support assistants and SEND specialist teachers.
The transdisciplinary team is the standout. Speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, art therapists, play therapists and physiotherapists work alongside the teaching staff rather than being bought in by the hour, and the campuses have purpose-built sensory rooms, movement areas, therapy spaces and accessible classrooms.
Teaching is pitched at each child's edge of learning, with deliberate work on functional and social skills, community access and, later, vocational opportunities, so that skills transfer into real settings rather than staying in the classroom.
Worth knowing
For students enrolled at St Andrews. Contact the admissions team about the specialist programmes specifically, as intake is separate from mainstream admission.
